Released in 1994 on the Mega Drive, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 continues Sonic’s adventures following the crash of the Death Egg on Floating Island. Dr Eggman seeks to restore his fortress to working order by harnessing the power of the Chaos Emeralds hidden on the island. To prevent Sonic from intervening, he manipulates Knuckles, guardian of the island and the emeralds, by making him believe that the blue hedgehog is the real threat.
The game marks the first video game appearance of Knuckles the Echidna, who is introduced as a new rival to Sonic. The story that began in *Sonic the Hedgehog 3* then continues in *Sonic & Knuckles*, also released in 1994, with both titles having been designed as two parts of the same adventure.
Carnival Night Zone is one of the environments featured in this adventure and stands out for its night-time funfair atmosphere, its bright colours and its numerous mechanisms. The Console Heroes diorama recreates this aesthetic in miniature form and brings Sonic and Knuckles together in a cartridge inspired by the original Mega Drive physical media.
