Player’s background and career (Lore)
Klaus Augenthaler was born on 26 September 1957 in Fürstenzell, Bavaria. He joined Bayern Munich’s youth teams in 1975, before moving up to the first team and making his Bundesliga debut during the 1977–78 season.
Initially trained as a striker, Augenthaler was gradually moved into defence before becoming one of the most influential sweeper-defenders in German football of his era. His reading of the game, his positioning and his shooting ability enabled him to become a central figure in the Bavarian defence.
His professional career was spent entirely with Bayern Munich. Over fifteen years with the first team, he made 545 official appearances, including 404 in the Bundesliga, and scored 52 goals in the German league. He became club captain in 1984 and retained the armband until the end of his career in 1991.
With Bayern, Augenthaler won seven German league titles in 1980, 1981, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1989 and 1990, as well as three German Cups in 1982, 1984 and 1986. He also reached the European Cup final twice, in 1982 and 1987.
One of his most famous goals came in August 1989 against Eintracht Frankfurt, when he scored from virtually the halfway line. This goal was subsequently named one of the most memorable goals of the decade in Germany.
Augenthaler earned 27 caps for the German national team. His international career reached its peak at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he played as a libero for the West German side. He featured in the final, which Germany won against Argentina, and thus became a world champion in his final international match.
After retiring from playing, Augenthaler remained closely linked to Bayern Munich and went on to pursue a career in coaching. In 2005, he was selected for the club’s Team of the Century, cementing his place amongst the great legends in Bayern’s history.
